No Free All-Night Trolley Rides Provided This New Year's Eve

San Diegans who traditionally rely on the free 24-hour trolley service provided by Metropolitan Transit Services on New Year's Eve may have to cut their festivities short this year.

Riders will need to purchase trolley tickets for $2.50 each way or $5 for a day pass.

All three trolley lines will leave from downtown in the early morning. Following are the times that the last trolley from each line leaves from downtown:

  • Blue Line southbound toward San Ysidro leaves at 1:08 a.m.
  • Blue Line northbound toward Old Town leaves at 2:01 a.m.
  • Orange Line eastbound toward Gillespie Field leaves at 1:04 a.m.

More times are available on the MTS website.

Riders will also need to confirm COASTER times if planning to connect to those trains heading north.

Regular bus schedules and times will be in effect both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. One person per each paying adult can ride the bus or trolley for free on New Year's Day with the "friends ride free" promotion provided by MTS.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
