Groundbreaking was held today for a project to extend the freeway portion of state Route 905 all the way to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.
The 905 is a freeway between interstates 5 and 805, but a busy surface street from there past Brown Field and to the border crossing, which is used heavily by large trucks. The surface street portion of the roadway is divided only by double-yellow lines, and is the site of frequent serious collisions.
Turning the 6 1/2-mile stretch into a freeway is expected to cost $20.2 million, which will be paid with federal stimulus money, according to Caltrans.
An official with the state transportation agency said the work is expected to be completed by early next year.
