Feds Sue UC San Diego For Employment Discrimination

Audio

Feds Sue UCSD

— The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the UC San Diego Health System for discriminating against non-U.S. citizens seeking employment.

The lawsuit accuses the health system of requiring newly hired non-U.S. citizens to present a Green Card to prove they were eligible to work. Federal law allows new hires to provide a range of other documents proving eligibility, such as a social security card and a driver license.

The suit, filed Dec. 6, alleges the health system allowed U.S. citizens to present such documents, but not non-U.S. citizens.

Debra Kain, director of media relations for UC San Diego Health System, said the government contacted them in January with concerns about the Green Card requirement.

“We took immediate steps when they told us we couldn’t do that to ensure that we did not require anyone to provide those,” Kain said.

She added that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent had since instructed human resources personnel on how to properly verify the employment eligibility of new hires.

In the lawsuit, the Department of Justice seeks a penalty against the health system and compensation to any non-U.S. citizens who were authorized to work and who may have lost wages or been fired because of the policy.

Getting sued by the feds because they followed their directions. This is just ridiculous. The federal government is too intrusive.

What about the American citizens who have completed and still have many student loans in the Medical field and is told it's a requirement to speak Spanish in the California medical field not discrimination. I'm a struggling single mom with so much medical training. And no career, while my neighbor who is here on a green card and less education than myself and she's doing great in the field, even paid top dollar. I don't know what the US gov is thinking when they allow more rights to those outside our borders than those of us legally here for centuries upon centuries paying taxes on everything down to our trash. Something really needs to change!

Allow me to add to my above comment. I've lived here in Escondido CA for nearly 12 years now and not only has my career choice and financial nose dive suffered due to my fellow Mexican-Americans, but so has my personal home life and family. I have a 3 year old who is half Mexican and half white. When I had become pregnant with my little angel I was so excited for him to have a huge family on his fathers side. I grew up with huge family gathers but over many years the older members have passed on and we just don't have the gatherings we use to have. So, here I thought great things for my son. Beings I'm white, my son has been alienated by his fathers side. He has never even received a birthday phone call from his grandparents. We spend many holidays as an ordinary day, only because I'm hated on as he is too because of the color of my skin. So much for an American dream.

No, AbsurdistWolf, UCSD Medical Center is not being sued for "following their directions." They are being sued for NOT following them.

No HemlTupUSgov, please don't distort things. Nobody hates you "because of the color of your skin." First of all, I am Mexican, and I don't hate "whites" because I am "white" myself. Furthermore, Mexicans do not see "whites" as different from themselves. Only racist "whites" see Mexicans as different. Mexicans, like most sane people, do hate racists, though. Are you one? Please don't become one. Thank you.
