Trouble At The Del Mar Fairgrounds

Aired 2/22/12 on KPBS Midday Edition.

Guests: Logan Jenkins, columnist, UT San Diego

Adam Day, President, board of directors, 22nd Agricultural District.

Tom Chino, renowned organic farmer, resigned from the board of directors of the 22nd Agricultural District when other board members requested information about his attorney. Chino, a blunt-spoken advocate of open meetings, was on the board less than a year. During his tenure he released to the public an audit from the California Department of Food and Agriculture which found that fairgrounds management had made improper payments to staff, among other violations.

The fairgrounds board did resolve a long-running dispute with the California Coastal Commission over improper use of land. The agreement included a fine of nearly $5 million which will go toward environmental improvements and restoration of wetlands. The fairgrounds will lose the dirt parking lot to the south, or 15 percent of its parking area, three years from now.

One strange comment during this program. They guy from the fairgrounds said that as part of the deal with the Coastal Commission they were getting rid of the "riffraff" as part of their environmental improvements. He was called on that and explicitly defined "riffraff" as old cement and rocks. The dictionary doesn't agree--it says, "riffraff |ˈrifˌraf|
disreputable or undesirable people : I don't think they talk to riffraff off the street.
ORIGIN late 15th cent. (as riff and raff): from Old French rif et raf ‘one and all, every bit,’ of Germanic origin.

So, if they're rousting the homeless we should know and if he was just being sloppy with his words that's fine--I do it all the time but I always am willing to clarify when called on it. It's an important distinction this time.

Mr. Coffman, the word was riprap which is a form of ruble or rock...not riffraff!
