Officers with the Palms Springs Police Department shot and killed Marine Cpl. Allan DeVillena II, 22, on Saturday morning, according to The Desert Sun.

DeVillena was assigned to the 1st Marine Logistical Group, which is based at Camp Pendleton, although The Desert Sun reports he was stationed at Twentynine Palms.

DeVillena's father, also named Allan, told The Desert Sun:

"The Marines came to the house on Saturday and gave us the news.

“We’re enroute to Palm Springs today and looking to get some answers."
The Palms Springs P.D. has put the two officers involved in the shooting on paid administrative leave. It's not exactly clear what prompted the officers, who were on bicycle patrol, to open fire on DeVillena. The shooting took place at a downtown parking garage.

DeVillena's family has set up a Facebook memorial page in his honor.
