DNC: Democrats Focused On 52nd District

— Thirty-eight San Diego Democrats are in Charlotte, North Carolina today for the Democratic National Convention.

Aired 9/3/12 on KPBS News.

The 52nd Congressional District is in the spotlight at preconvention meetings at the Democratic National Convention. The head of the San Diego Democratic Party says even Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has talked about the district being one of the key races for the Democrats.

The convention hasn’t officially started and already the San Diego delegation heard about the importance of the 52nd congressional district from several high profile speakers, according to Jess Durfee, Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party.

The new district, created by last year’s redistricting process, includes Coronado, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and parts of North County, including Poway and Rancho Bernardo.

The two candidates – Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray (a former San Diego councilman) and Democrat Scott Peters, a San Diego Port Commissioner (and former San Diego City Council president), are in a tight race.

By noon Monday, three democratic members of congress had addressed the California delegation at pre-convention meetings.

“All of them in addition to (Minority) Leader (Nancy) Pelosi mentioned the Scott Peters (52nd) race," Durfee said.

The convention officially begins Tuesday evening. The San Diego delegation includes superdelegates Congressman and mayoral candidate Bob Filner, and Representative Susan Davis.

Bilbray voted repeatedly to defund Planned Parenthood and supported a Republican agenda aimed at severely undercutting women’s access to health care and limiting a woman’s right to choose. He even voted against allowing hospitals to provide emergency abortion care when a woman’s life is in danger.Despite his debate rhetoric, Congressman Bilbray has been a willing fighter in the Republican War on Women and voted for an extreme ideological agenda that limits women’s access to necessary health care

Brian Bilbray's Dangerous Record

benefits and raise the retirement age to 69 or more. Voted to cut the
Social Security Administration by $1.7 billion.
Voted to take away Medicare as we know it and leave us at the mercy
of insurance companies. Voted to double seniors’ costs and to raise
the age of eligibility for Medicare from 65 to 67.
Voted to slash $1.4 trillion from Medicaid – the health care program
for seniors, women, children and people with disabilities.
Voted to give a $1.1 trillion tax cut to the richest Americans and to
