San Diego Man Faces Felony Charge Over Trimming Shrubs

SAN DIEGO — Trimming overgrown shrubs may have won Juvencio Adame praise from neighbors, but it also brought the San Diego man a felony charge from prosecutors.

U-T San Diego reports Saturday that 46-year-old Adame was charged with defacement, damage and destruction in excess of $400 after he pruned shrubbery on city land next to his Ocean Beach property in July.

Adame told neighbors that the shrubs in the neighborhood popular with surfers had become a haven for homeless people to sleep and litter.

Adame is due in court Thursday. He and the district attorney's office declined to comment on the case.

Neighbor Glenn Goss says the case is a waste of taxpayer money and that Adame is being prosecuted for doing the kind of pruning that city workers ought to do.

It figures. $7 million+ to replace the progressive embarrassment Filner, no money for potholes or public property maintenance - but plenty of funding to prosecute a resident trying to keep up his neighborhood when the city failed to provide services.

Maybe justice will be served and the DA will satisfied when the bums who lived in those shrubs start squatting in the house while he is serving time for shrub abuse. Taxes will drop with property values as the bums takeover and the city may be hard pressed to afford all those DA lawyer warriors to mete out justice for the shrubs. Oh, the horrors!

Wow, Is this really true?

I hope this story stays in the news so we can find out what sort of a place we live in.

As Regular says, this needs to stay in the news. As government at all levels provides fewer services and protections, citizens will have an increasing need to step up handle things. The alternative is to watch our neighborhoods descend into chaos as the politicians dawdle.

If the bums were hiding in the bushes in front of your house what would you do?

From the UT article's comments:

"There's way more to this story. I live in the area and Vince is a huge problem in OB. He constantly fights with the bongo players, messes with the sewer lines with the police trailer he hates in the parking lot of the pier, has waged a small war on OBMA, and he has been in numerous fights with people in the area. Vince calls the police all the time for nothing and to basically complain that OB is... OB. If you think this is a waste of money, you should see how many police hours have been used by Vince to make citizen's arrests for bongo drum players at the beach. The guy is not all there and has been a thorn in the area's side for years. This is just karma catching up. Of course the UT is going to make it a scandal, but he obviously not going to prison for three years... and even through that's the harshest punishment possibly for this type of felony charge, I doubt the UT can find a single person sentenced to that in the last ten years. More likely he pays a small fine, put on informal "don't do it again probation" for a few months, and faces no jail time at all."

@RLA. "Homeless" does not equal "bum" to those who are aware of the economy. That the government provides fewer services and protections can be laid at the feet of those who would, for example, rather shut down the government--at a cost to the economy of $24 billion--rather than cooperate to make it work.

Anon11 - thanks for the "rest of the story", it will be interesting to see how this sorts out.

Len - I don't think that the recent economy's homeless are the bums who inhabit OB. They have been there for years and as evidenced in the politically incorrect bumper sticker from several years ago they are not a new phenomenon. Many local residents and most local businesses are not happy to be the "host" community.

Please don't feed our bums. Should be posted from pb to the midway. You stop feeding em they might go somewhere else.

Matthew McConaughey is a bongo drummer? Well, I may have to reconsider my disdain for bongo drummers then.

There is always more to these types of stories and I suspect Anon is correct. The city and local residents are probably fed up with this guy and enforcing a law they usually wouldn't as a result.

What are you talking about? Play your bongo drum or type. Pick one.
