Sometimes all you need is music. And sometimes you need that music live. Welcome to LIVE AT THE BELLY UP. San Diego has long been known as a hotbed of great musical talent. What’s more, San Diego is home to one of the best music venues on the West Coast. Since 1974, the Belly Up has been featuring great local bands from the Cedros Design District. Groove, dance and sing! Live at the Belly Up. This episode features performances by Common Sense and Sara Petite.
Common Sense has established itself as one of California’s premier reggae rock bands with countless shows that are of legend over the last 20 years at the Belly Up. The band's influences, reggae, rock and ska, give them a roots sound all their own. Bandmates Nick Hernandez, Larry Young, Billy Sherman and Phil Gough have been brothers in music for years and are committed to the performance and sound they love and that helped to make the band a beach culture staple in California.
The band works together to a craft soulful and intelligent sound that tells stories of real life. With heartfelt lyrics and melodic harmonies Common Sense delivers a true music experience. Noted for their high energy live shows, they continue to grow a loyal fan base.
The band has toured with many legendary reggae artists such as Ziggy Marley, Steel Pulse, and Jimmy Cliff. Their far-reaching style has earned them a spot on national tours from the Van’s WARP Tour to Reggae Sun Splash and Reggae on the River. Sara Petite is an Americana/country/bluegrass singer/songwriter originally from Summer, Wash. who has in called San Diego home for the last decade and rooted herself firmly in the San Diego music scene as the go-to Americana, country and bluegrass talent.
In addition to having her musical style compared to country greats like Reba McIntyre and Dolly Parton. Petite is a three time San Diego Music Awards winner as well as being a top 5 finalist in the Great Waters Folk Festival Song Contest and a Grand Prize winner in Portland's 2006 Songwriting Contest.
