The State Of San Diego’s Inner City

Aired 1/15/14 on KPBS Midday Edition.

GUESTS:

Christopher Yanov, executive director of Reality Changers, an organization in City Heights that helps inner-city kids go to college

Murtaza Baxamusa, director of planning and development with the San Diego Building Trades Family Housing Corporation

Transcript

Interim San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria will present the annual state of the city address Wednesday night.

Gloria is expected to assess San Diego's overall condition as the city moves on from the turmoil of the Bob Filner scandal.

But overall assessments can leave out a lot.

Under-served areas of San Diego are often not included in the big plans and policy agendas of city leaders. So the nonprofit Reality Changers will offer its own address, focusing on the state of San Diego's inner-city.

The issues range from the need for quality education to better-paying jobs for struggling San Diegans.

Here's a last minute addition to the Report, thanks to USA Today (no local media have picked up on it yet). American Airlines is cutting its direct service from Lindbergh Field to Washington's DCA. What really hurts is when you look at the other cities that got dumped by AA and who they added to replace them. We may be America's Finest City but we sure aren't American's! Pity we can't get some of those Middle Eastern and Chinese airlines to fly out of San Diego.

Those are the same issues for the rest of San Diego, too, not just the inner city. But, if the inner city wants to further segregate itself with a separate address, fine by me.

In fact, why doesn't City Heights secede and create their own city? Then they could have real city addresses instead of pretending.
