San Diego police investigate a shooting in Valencia Park that left two men dead and another wounded, May 26, 2015.

An investigation was underway Tuesday into a shooting in San Diego's Valencia Park neighborhood that left two men dead and a third wounded.

Two gunmen approached a group of people gathered outside a home on Groveland Drive near 53rd Street and opened fire around 10:45 p.m. Monday, said San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison. Police officers patrolling the area heard the gunfire, but the shooters ran off before they arrived.

One of the wounded men was found in a courtyard behind the residence and died at the scene, Rorrison said. A second man was found lying in the front yard and was taken to a hospital but later died.

Rorrison said both men sustained bullet wounds to their torsos. Their names were being withheld until family members could be notified.

A third man showed up at a hospital about 15 minutes after the shooting started, Rorrison said. He was treated for a wound to his shoulder that was not considered life-threatening.

Rorrison spoke to the news media early Tuesday following the shooting, according to 10News. He said:

“There was a gathering in the outside patio, where two people were watching a sporting event. The two shooters approached on foot, both of them brandished handguns and began shooting. The crowd at that point broke up rapidly and people started running. We know that one of the victims was chased and shot again.”

Police said both suspects were black, and one was wearing a black baseball cap, a white T-shirt and black pants.

Rorrison asked anyone with additional information on the shooting to call police at (619) 531-2425 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477
