Noah Taylor as a young Hitler and John Cusack as an art dealer in Max.
The new film Max (opening February 21 at Landmark Theaters) ponders what might have happened if an aspiring painter named Adolf Hitler met a Jewish art dealer in post-World War I Munich. Max Rothman (played by John Cusack) is a German Jew who lost his right arm as well as his ability to paint in World War I. Rather than wallow in self-pity over his loss, Max opens an art gallery to promote the works of others as well as the new modernist movement. At the opening of a new show, Max meets another war veteran who also has artistic aspirations.
Hitler:
"Hitler, Adolf Hitler... I did some modern stuff in the trenches."
Max:
"That I would very much like to see."
