Cross-border collaboration to promote regional economy

Business leaders from both sides of the California Mexico border met in San Diego today to discuss plans for boosting economic cooperation. One theme that emerged was how to create a regional economy

Business leaders from both sides of the California Mexico border met in San Diego today to discuss plans for boosting economic cooperation. One theme that emerged was how to create a regional economy given the immigration debate that's raging in Washington. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

The event was sponsored by San Diego Dialogue, who's members argue that California's competitiveness depends on the border region. San Diego Dialogue recently released a report concluding there's parallel growth in industries on both sides of the border. And if properly leveraged, it could spur major economic development.

Baja California Governor Eugenio Elorduy says San Diego and Baja can be an example of collaboration. But U.S. Congressmen need to lay down the political banners.

Elorduy: "Migration helps the growth of the economy. So I would request, legislate with a true reality as to the topic, not because you are in a mid-term election scenario."

San Diego Dialogue wants to create a border center to analyze regional opportunities and foster relationships and investment. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
