Advocates of doctor-assisted suicide say they're encouraged by a new public opinion poll that reveals strong support for the concept. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The latest Field Poll shows 7 out of 10 Californians believe terminally ill people should have the right to ask for a lethal dose of drugs.
A state senate measure would permit adults who are given less than six months to get life-ending medications from a doctor.
Will Shuck is a spokesman for Assemblywoman Patty Berg, who co-wrote the bill. He says Democratic leaders in both houses support it.
Berg: I think it says that at the top, the people who make the most intricate calculated political decisions see this as not only good, important public policy but safe politics.
But the Catholic Church remains opposed to doctor-assisted suicide. The Church lobbied successfully to derail the bill last year. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
