A new report finds Miramar could accommodate both a civilian and military airport. The San Diego County Airport Authority staff will present the study to the board next week. But the media got a glimpse of it today. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.

The report finds that establishing a joint-use airport at Miramar would not interfere with the military's operations there or its mission.

This is in spite of the military's position that it has no intention of allowing civilian air operations at its bases.

Authority President Thella Bowens defended the study from reporters who questioned whether it was a waste of money because of the military's stance.

Bowens: When you look at an issue that's this important to this community, the amount of money that we have spent is really quite miniscule, the long term benefits of having or not having a constrained airport.

The Airport Authority are expected to decide on a future airport site June 5th, with voters getting the final say in November. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
