Many boaters will be hitting the water this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend. And safety officials want to pound one point home: wear a life jacket. Sacramento Reporter Ellen Ciurczak has more.
This week is National Safe Boating Week. Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, says even strong swimmers should wear a life jacket when on a boat. That's because a slip or fall could send someone into the water unexpectedly:
Chambers: We encourage them to wear a life jacket. Drowning is the biggest problem that we have out on the water.
Chambers says boat drivers have to be hyper aware, because they must know what is happening around them in a 360 degree area. And Chambers says boating and drinking alcohol never go together.
