The Seven marines and one Navy corpsman charged with murder have all hired civilian defense attorneys at their own expense. They've also been appointed military council. And their attorneys are coming out swinging. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.
Several of the defense attorneys, both civilian and military, attended the news conference where Marines officially announced the charges. They spoke out afterward to the media, proclaiming their clients' innocence.
David Brahms is a Carlsbad-based civilian attorney representing one of the accused, Lance Corporal Robert Pennington. He says there is absolutely no proof that his client did anything wrong.
Pennington: We have no evidence, what we have is leaks from pusillanimous bastards at the Pentagon who I've previously indicated should be hung from a public square until dead and have their entrails thrown to feral pigs.
The Marines insist the military justice system will provide fair treatment for the accused. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
