Navy Broadway Complex may take longer than expected

The latest site plans for the Bay front Navy Broadway Complex contain a little more open space than previous versions, but still less than the original design. San Diego city's redevelopment agency reviewed the plans Wednesday, KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The developer of the prime bay front site, the Doug Manchester Group, showed the Center City Development Board a new set of site plans for eight acres Navy Broadway Complex. It is the fifth version so far. Board member Wayne Raffesberger says since the plans keep changing, it may be unreasonable to expect the city to give its final approval by the end of July as planned.

Raffesberger: "We're still looking at these versions come at us , we saw the most recent one it's better its moving in the right direction, are we there yet, no not in my opinion we've still got a ways to go."

Raffesberger says he wont be satisfied till he sees an architectural plan that stuns him.

The navy and the Manchester Group are working to finalize a lease agreement by an end of the year deadline. CCDC President Nancy Graham said the agency could delay its approval till the very last moment if necessary. Alison St John, KPBS news.

She has done many stories on the military in San Diego, and the series she edited on the challenges veterans face returning from active duty to civilian life won “Best of Show” from the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists. She occasionally hosts the KPBS Roundtable and KPBS Midday Edition. Alison has won awards from the San Diego Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, and the California Golden Mike Awards. Alison was born in Tanzania, brought up in Scotland, and earned her degree in psychology and sociology from Durham University in England. Her postgraduate diploma is in student counseling. She worked in England, Nigeria, Switzerland, Belgium, India, and Japan before moving to the United States in 1981. She now lives in Oceanside and enjoys how her community is growing and changing.
