The political horizon is getting darker for Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides. The latest Public Policy Institute poll shows the candidate is trailing Republican incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger by about 17 points. That lead is four points bigger now, than it was two months ago. PPIC executive director Mark Baldassare says the survey shows that Angelides is unable to capitalize on his party’s voter registration advantage.
Baldassare: We don’t yet see evidence that Phil Angiledes’ campaign has had an effect on his support, the kind of effect that would make this a closer race. That’s not to say that it can’t happen, just that it hasn’t happened.
Baldassare says there are still six weeks until election day and Angelides could close the gap. He says the latest poll of likely voters indicates the upcoming debate could be crucial to the Democrats’ effort to build his base of support.
