CCDC Approves Master Plan for Navy Broadway Redevelopment

Tom Fudge : Yesterday the City of San Diego’s downtown redevelopment agency more or less gave the go-ahead for the Navy Broadway Complex. The 15 acre development will be right on the bayfront, on what some people call San Diego’s most desirable downtown property.

The development plan has been criticized for months as too dense, too tall, and basically unworthy of the location. The plan was established more than ten years ago at a time when downtown was a very different place. Nobody on the board of the redevelopment agency, the CCDC, spoke enthusiastically about the proposed development. But they said it did live up to the original agreement between the city and Navy, and that’s what they were voting on.

There are some matters that the CCDC will still have some influence over, including the design of the individual buildings. And city officials are still trying to work out a deal with the developer, the Manchester Group, about creating some extra parkland.
