Bilbray Defeats Busby

Republican Brian Bilbray of Carlsbad defeated Democrat Francine Busby by a wide margin in the race for the 50th Congressional District seat. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

In a rematch of their June 6 special election, Bilbray again carried the day. He says his stance on illegal immigration gave him the edge over Busby. At a campaign party in downtown San Diego, Bilbray 34ed the late California Congressman Sonny Bono.

Bilbray: That Sonny said it quite clear when they asked him what his position is on illegal immigration. And he said, "What don’t you understand about the word illegal?" Thank you very much.

Bilbray says he’ll work with both parties in Congress on the illegal immigration issue. Francine Busby urged her supporters to celebrate the change in the House leadership. The incumbents won the other San Diego County congressional races – Duncan Hunter, Bob Filner, Darrell Issa and Susan Davis were easily reelected to their district seats. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
