Tom Fudge: There are a lot of kids from wealthy communities attending public school in California. But in many of those well-heeled districts, private money helps to bolster the curriculum. There are about 500 foundations in California that were created to raise money to supplement public education in particular districts.
The foundations typically call on parents of school children and school alumni to raise money. These foundations are controversial. Not surprisingly, the foundations in wealthy communities raise more money than the ones in poor areas. And that tends to increase the inequality in our state's educational system. Recently, a dust-up has taken place over a foundation in Del Mar, among the very parents and educators the foundation is supposed to help.
