State Lawmakers Divided on Route to Investigate Lam Dismissal

Washington is in an uproar about reports of White House involvement in the dismissal of eight federal prosecutors late last year. Angry lawmakers are calling on the administration to explain the move that included the firing of San Diego's U.S. Attorney Carol Lam. But California lawmakers are divided on what action should be taken. Benjamin Shaw reports from Capitol Hill.

Watchdog groups in Washington are asking for a special prosecutor to investigate possible criminal violations. But Senator Diane Feinstein says that isn't necessary -- yet.

Feinstein : We ought to finish our hearings, we ought to do our due diligence, and then if that's part of the findings, that one or all of us make, that's one thing to lay forward.

The California Democrat did suggest subpoenas be issued for Presidential Advisor Carl Rove and former White House counsel Harriet Meyers. Vista Republican Congressman Darrell Issa says the White House has every right to fire federal prosecutors.

Issa : The White House hired these people. It has the right to fire them at will.

Issa had been critical of Carol Lam for not prosecuting illegal immigrants. From Capitol Hill, Benjamin Shaw, KPBS News.
