Mission Valley has lots of apartments and condominiums, but few kids and public schools. But administrators at San Diego's High Tech High would like to put a campus there. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
High Tech High is a well-financed charter school group with campuses in Point Loma, Chula Vista and San Marcos. Now officials want to open the newest campus in Mission Valley, just north of Frairs Road.
Some people question the plan because most Mission Valley residents are young professionals with no kids. But High Tech High officials say there is a small and growing number of parents and school-age children who want a neighborhood school. They also say a new San Diego campus is needed for all the kids who are waiting to get into Point Loma's High Tech High.
The proposed school is part of a larger redevelopment project that would transform 230 acres of industrial space into shops and homes. Charter school officials will introduce their plan during the San Diego school board meeting today.
