Lawmakers Miss Budget Deadline For 21st Year in a Row

Lawmakers on Friday are supposed to have a state budget passed. At least, that's according to California's constitution. But it's not going to happen, because lawmakers haven't worked out a deal yet. This will mark the 21st year in a row they haven't met the deadline.

Tim Hodson is the Executive Director of the Center for California Studies at Sacramento State University . He says that's partly because there are no real consequences.

Hodson : It is like a little kid who, his parents say, don't have any more cookies, and he takes a couple more cookies and then the parents don't do anything about it and then the lesson is, boy, I didn't get punished, so I guess I can take as many cookies as I want.

Hodson says the more important deadline is July first, when the new fiscal year begins. That's when a budget is supposed to be signed by the Governor.

Lawmakers met that goal last year, but missed it the five years prior. Legislative leaders say they're making progress and are aiming to have a deal on-time.
