California State University faculty members are crying foul about an idea being floated in the state budget negotiations. They say a proposed 1 percent across-the-board cut could affect their hard-fought pay raises – and trigger a strike. Sacramento reporter Jenny O'Mara has more.
CSU Faculty Association officials and the system's chancellor are against the proposed cut that would include public universities. CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed says the Cal State University budget is already tight – because of recently approved pay raises.
Reed: So we would have to step back and see where we could take a $28 million reduction.
Senate Republicans want to shrink an ongoing deficit. Senate Republican leader Dick Ackerman proposed the idea of an across-the-board, 1 percent cut.
Ackerman: Everybody wants to protect their programs and our programs, so this just gives the administration, which is in control of all the programs, a little more flexibility to decide where they want to do it.
A spokesman for the Assembly speaker says Democrats oppose trimming the CSU budget.
