San Diego school officials may need to hire more teachers and staff to deal with the district's unexpected enrollment growth. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
San Diego Unified lost 200 students this year at its traditional district schools, but its public charter schools, education centers and early education programs brought in a lot more kids. Those programs helped to boost the overall enrollment to 135,000 students -- an increase of about 2,000 kids from last year. The district's Gino Flores say the district will get more state funding to hire more teachers.
Flores: When the enrollments are high then there are certainly more dollars that come to us both state and federal. We may then start allocating more resources, fiscal resources, out to schools so they can hire more staff so we can better manage each of the schools and classrooms better.
Over the past few years the district has lost thousands of dollars in state funding because it was losing students.
