Mystery Continues to Surround the Death of Edgar Allan Poe
Tom Fudge:
If you were to pick a definitive writer when it comes to the fear of death and dying – an appropriate subject for Halloween – it might be the American poet and fiction writer Edgar Allan Poe . It's interesting, though perhaps not surprising, that the story of Poe's own death still fascinates literature and history buffs. He died in 1849.Some of you have probably heard the story that he died face-down in a gutter after a drinking binge. It's a good story, but it's not true. To find out what we do know, and why some of the facts around Poe's death still elude us, is Matthew Pearl. Also joining us, to read some of Poe's literary words that help illuminate his life and thinking, is David Cohen.
