A Woman Spends a Year Living Without “Made in China”

Tom Fudge: Take a minute to take a look at a few of the things you have around you. Where were your shoes made? What about your watch? If you're in the kitchen, find the national origin of your coffee maker. Chances are you're finding the label "Made in China" all over your house. All over your workplace. Perhaps even all over yourself.

This fact occurred to Sara Bongiorni after Christmas a couple of years ago. And she decided to undertake an experiment. She decided that she and her husband would spend a whole year not buying anything made in China. It took a little effort to talk her husband into it, but she managed to do it.

The result was a year of considerable inconvenience and expense, but it did result in a book. Sara, who's a native San Diegan, by the way, is author of A Year without “Made in China”: One Family's True Life Adventure in the Global Economy .
