The San Diego Unified School Board will vote on whether to restore about 480 jobs for next school year. The action comes after several months of uncertainly and confusion over district layoffs. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
District officials first proposed cutting 900 teachers in San Diego Unified. They also wanted to cut or reduce the hours of about 1,200 school employees. But now district officials say they can restore roughly 480 of the positions.
Officials say they can take the action because the Governor is no longer proposing deep budget cuts to education.
School board member Sheila Jackson says the uncertainty over the future of teachers has been felt in the classroom.
Jackson: It is difficult to stand in front of students and teach sometimes when you don't know where you are going to be working at next year, if you're going to have your home, if you're going to have your job. And as much as we try to hide it from children, they can tell when something is wrong with that teacher regardless of how well they try to conceal it.
The school board is expected to restore the 480 positions. More than half of those positions affect teachers.
