Tom Fudge:
An American soldier who died in Iraq. His twin brother, a gay actor. And the soldier's widow who works as a psychological therapist but whose most challenging client is herself. Those are the characters in a new play called
Dying City
. The play is written by Christopher Shinn. It was first performed by the Royal Court Theater in London. It got its New York premiere the following year, to very good reviews. And now, San Diego's Cygnet Theater is giving the play its West Coast premiere.
An explanation of the plot would give the impression this play is a political statement, or at least a review of recent American history. But this is a show about relationships. It's also a major challenge for actors. The male actor in this play portrays both Craig, the soldier, who we see in flashback scenes.... and his twin brother Peter. Joining me to talk about this play is the director of the Cygnet production, Francis Gercke and the two starring actors, Christy Yael and Sean Cox.
Guests:
- Francis Gercke is the Associate Artistic Director at Cygnet Theater and directed Dying City.
- Christy Yael plays the role of Kelly in Dying City .
- Sean Cox plays the role of Peter and Craig in the play.
