Tom Fudge : The top ten list is a well-know tool in both journalism and comedy. Sure, it's a little gimmicky. But there's something about us that wants to rank things. Why would U.S. News and World Reports keep coming out with that edition that tells us what the top 100 U.S. colleges are.

So, as we reach the end of this year, Gloria Penner has decided to write a list of the top ten news stories of 2008.
