BackCountry Fire Stations To Remain Open

San Diego County and Cal Fire say they will juggle firefighting staff to make sure all 53 fire stations covering San Diego’s back country remain open.

San Diego County and Cal Fire say they will juggle firefighting staff to make sure all 53 fire stations covering San Diego’s back country remain open.

Cal Fire, the state’s fire fighting agency, will make $1.3 million in cuts in San Diego County, starting in the New Year, because of budget shortfalls.

But County Fire Services Coordinator, Ralph Steinhoff, says, by reducing staffing to 2 people per fire engine, the service will be maintained.

Steinhoff: Cos there’s not a lot of fire hydrants out there, so tank water is important to us. So it’ll be at least 2 engines and on most fires, two engines and a water truck. What we just did was reshuffle the contracts, we are not backfilling the state on the state’s budget shortfall.

The reduced staffing will continue till fire season begins again next April.
