Seniors at Mira Mesa High School got a hefty financial gift today that will help them pay for their prom this year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Senior Raquel Burgett joined Mira Mesa High's prom committee this year because she always dreamed of having the ultimate prom.
But her hopes were dashed this year after a lackluster year of fundraising.
Raquel and her classmates decided to take matters into their own hands and entered a national competition that gives high schools $25,000 proms. Mira Mesa was up against 200 other high schools for the prize...and won thanks to hundreds of online votes.
Raquel says the prom is more than just a dance.
Burgett: We have prom and then we have graduation. So this is the last thing we get to do as kids before we have to go out into the real world and become responsible adults. We get to act crazy and still have the protection and safety of being in high school.
Raquel says the lion's share of the money will be spent on an awesome display of lights at their venue. Part of the prize money will also go towards paying for their senior Grad Night.
