San Diego's Natural History Museum will open an exhibition today that displays the inner workings of real bodies in life-like poses. KPBS reporter Tom Fudge has more.
The Body Worlds exhibition shows bodies that have been dehydrated then infused with plastic. The result are dynamic sculptures of real bodies that are roped with muscle and display the inner organs. Angelina Whalley is director of the Institute for Plasticization, which created the exhibition. She says she wanted to animate the bodies by showing them skateboarding or playing soccer.
Whalley: Body Worlds comprises of dead people. But it's teaches of life. It's actually a meditation on life.
She says it would be boring to show the bodies in static positions.
Whalley: If there's a soccer player and you play soccer yourself, you are much more intrigued to see which muscles scores the ball.
Whally says all of the bodies on display were donated for exhibition and education. Some similar exhibitions have not been able to account for the bodies they display. Tom Fudge, KPBS news.
