Nearly 200 Kaiser Permanente employees marked Martin Luther King Day by volunteering at the San Diego Food Bank. There was plenty of work to keep them busy.
Kaiser volunteers started showing up at the food bank at 8 a.m. They did a variety of chores, from cleaning up the warehouse to bagging and boxing food for distribution.
Dr. Rod Rapier is a gastroenterologist at the Kaiser Hospital in Mission Gorge.
"Today we've been sortin' different canned foods, all sorts of donated foods, makin' sure that the foods are not expired, make sure they're in good condition, and making sure it gets to the people that needs it," said Dr. Rapier.
Food bank officials say they appreciate the volunteer help. The organization says the number of local people who receive donated food has grown by 52 percent in the last year.
