Central Valley Gang Crackdown Results In 100 Arrests

California Attorney General Kamala Harris has announced more than 100 arrests as the culmination of an anti-gang operation in the Central Valley.

Harris made the announcement Wednesday in the town of Los Baños. She was flanked by other law enforcement leaders, including US Attorney Ben Wagner.

“This operation, Red Zone, is the latest step in a sustained campaign to put a hammer on those members of the Nuestra Familia and Norteno gangs that have been dealing methamphetamine, trafficking in arms and spreading a wave of crime up and down the Central Valley," Harris said.

Investigators said the criminal activities are coordinated from inside state prisons by the Nuestra Familia gang. Its leaders use Norteño gang members to carry out criminal operations on the streets.

The Attorney General said she’ll work with the state’s prison system to end the gang operations behind bars. She said much of the trouble begins at the maximum security prison at Pelican Bay in Northern California.
