LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Less than a week after West Hollywood became the nation's first city to ban the sale of fur, a retailer has filed suit to have the new law overturned.
Mayfair House, which filed the action Thursday in federal court, says that under the California Constitution only the state Legislature has the authority to regulate the protection of wildlife.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/18sULxa ) reports that West Hollywood City Attorney Michael Jenkins is reviewing the lawsuit.
West Hollywood's fur ban went into effect on Saturday, following two years of debate.
It restricts the sale of fur used in "wearing apparel," which means fur is banned in clothes, shoes, hats and gloves. Purses and blankets are exempt, as are secondhand clothes containing fur.
