Nine people died on San Diego County roadways between Christmas Eve and Sunday night, a California Highway Patrol officer said Tuesday.
Sixty-two people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving by CHP officers during the five-day period, according to the state police agency.
Statewide, 42 people died in traffic collisions and 997 were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Sunday, according to the CHP.
The figure for fatalities accounts for all traffic deaths in the state. The DUI arrest total is only for those made by the CHP, not local agencies.
