San Diegans Face Property Tax Deadline
Tuesday, December 9, 2014
San Diego County property owners face a deadline Wednesday: the first installment of their property taxes is due.
San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said failure to make the payment on time will result in a 10 percent penalty.
To make sure that doesn't happen, treasurer-tax collector offices around the county will have extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
In addition, the downtown branch at 1600 Pacific Highway and the San Marcos branch at 141 East Carmel St. will offer a checks-only drive through drop box from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., McAllister said. Cash will only be accepted at the downtown branch.
In September, the county mailed more than 984,000 property tax bills to be paid by owners in two installments.
McAllister said so far 40 percent of first installments have been received. In other words, 530,000 payments are still outstanding.
The agency expects to generate more than $5.08 billion in revenue this fiscal year.
