Veterans Day will be observed Tuesday in downtown San Diego with a parade dedicated to members of the armed forces who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. near the County Administration Center. The 1-mile parade routes follows North Harbor Drive toward Seaport Village and winds up at G Street and Pacific Highway.

Because of limited parking in the area, organizers urge parade-goers to take the San Diego Trolley to the Santa Fe Depot or nearby stops.

Along the parade route, the San Diego Blood Bank will hold its annual Veterans Day Blood Drive at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, 910 N. Harbor Drive.

At 2 p.m., a fundraiser will be held for the Ocean Beach Veterans Plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue. The Ocean Beach Community Development Corp. will display 3-D artwork of the final design for a new plaza to be built just south of the main lifeguard tower.

Organizers said the memorial honoring area residents killed in battle is in disrepair.

"The inscriptions on the original medallions are so worn down you can't even read the names of my veteran brothers and sisters," said veteran Dave Martin. "These are men and women who fought and, for some, paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. This new Veterans Plaza will show them the respect they deserve."

Other events to honor veterans are scheduled Tuesday at:
