DUIs Decrease In San Diego County Over New Year’s

Arrests for suspicion of drunk driving on San Diego County highways were down this year compared to last for the New Year's holiday and the number of fatalities was identical both years, but statewide arrests for suspected drunk driving were up while fatalities were down.

For the 60-hour period from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Sunday, there were 43 arrests made in San Diego County for suspicion of drunk driving compared to 51 arrests last year. There were two fatalities reported for the same period in both years.

Statewide, a total of 844 arrests were made for suspicion of drunk driving this year compared to 792 arrests made for the same period last year. Deaths were slightly down statewide, with 13 fatalities reported this year compared to 14 last year.

Arrest numbers for suspicion of drunk driving were only those made by CHP officers. Fatalities reported were for all law enforcement agencies.

The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways and on all roads in unincorporated areas.
