'Cabaret,' 'Matilda the Musical' and Disney's 'The Lion King' are among standouts for 2016/2017

Broadway San Diego announced its upcoming 40th anniversary season with a collection of musicals that includes current Broadway hits to returning favorites.

Here's a look at the lineup:

"Cabaret" Aug. 23-28, 2016

Direct from Broadway, this Tony Award-winning revival first featured Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams and now heads to San Diego with a touring cast. Created by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, the show takes place at the raucous Kit Kat Klub in pre-WWII Germany. (Rating: mature audiences)


Disney’s "The Lion King" Sept. 7-Oct. 2, 2016

The popular musical returns to San Diego for an extended stay. Revisit the unique theatrical story that features beloved songs and stunning visuals by director Julie Taymor. The show features music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning artists Elton John and Tim Rice. (Rating: all ages)

"The Sound of Music" Nov. 15-20, 2016

Former Old Globe Artistic Director Jack O'Brien returns to San Diego with this new production about the beloved von Trapp family. The journey of Maria includes memorable songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Edelweiss.” (Rating: all ages)

"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" Nov. 29-Dec. 4, 2016

The innovative American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask is a genre-bending musical about a fictional rock band. It features a singer who assumes a female persona after a botched sex change operation. (Rating: mature audiences)

"Rent" Jan. 10-15, 2017

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jonathan Larson's rock musical — a modern-day retelling of Puccini's "La Bohème." The show follows a year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. (Rating: mature audiences)

"Matilda the Musical" Jan. 31-Feb. 5, 2017

Time magazine’s No. 1 show of the year, this musical is based on the novel by Roald Dahl. Winner of 50 international awards, including four Tonys, it follows the story of a smart girl who tries to change her destiny. (Rating: ages 6 and up)


"Finding Neverland" April 4-9, 2017

Directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus, this tells the story behind Peter Pan playwright, J.M. Barrie. After meeting four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother, Barrie sets out to write a play that would astound London theatergoers. (Rating: all ages)

"Jersey Boys" May 9-14, 2017

The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons returns to its original hometown. Revisit the true story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, a group of blue-collar boys who become one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time thanks to songs like "Sherry," "Big Girls Don’t Cry," "Oh What A Night," "Walk Like A Man," and many more. (Rating: ages 8 and up)

"The Bodyguard" June 13-18, 2017

This musical is based on the 1990s film and stars R&B singer Deborah Cox. It follows former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, who is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. You'll hear popular songs, including "So Emotional," "One Moment in Time," "Saving All My Love," and, of course, "I Will Always Love You." (Rating: mature audiences)
