Gusty Winds In Parts Of San Diego County To Ease Up

The gusty winds that have been buffeting parts of San Diego County are expected to ease up later Monday.

Mount Laguna clocked the strongest wind gust in the county overnight — 67 miles per hour — followed by Volcan Mountain at 51 mph, according to the National Weather Service. In a 12-hour period ending shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, peak wind speeds elsewhere in the county were measured at 44 mph in Harrison Park, 39 mph in both Julian and Ocotillo Wells, 37 mph in Ranchita and 35 mph in Borrego Springs and at the Lucky Five Ranch.

A National Weather Service wind advisory for the mountains and deserts is scheduled to expire at 10 a.m. Sustained wind speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected during the advisory period, as are gusts of up to 45 mph. Isolated wind gusts may reach 60 mph.

"A trough of low pressure moving inland through the great basin will maintain stronger onshore flow and periods of strong and gusty winds for the mountains and deserts into this morning," according to the weather service. "Winds will gradually diminish for most areas during the late morning and afternoon — except for the upper deserts where stronger winds will continue through this afternoon, diminishing by early evening."

Forecasters urged residents and travelers in the mountains and deserts to watch out for blowing sand and dust Monday morning.
