UC San Diego ranks fifth in the U.S. for colleges that provide their students with the best value, according to a list released Tuesday by Forbes magazine.

UC Berkeley ranked first, followed by Brigham Young University, the University of Florida and UCLA.

Most of the schools on the list are located on the West Coast, are public, and have a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, according to the magazine. Most UC campuses were included.

The list was based on the quality of the academic institutions, gross tuition and fees, post-graduation earnings data from Payscale and the U.S. Department of Education, the average number of years it takes to graduate and the percentage of students who don't graduate within six years.

Forbes also used a measurement created by the Brookings Instiution that assessed student outcomes beyond what their backgrounds would predict.

UCSD was the only San Diego school on the magazine's Top 50 list.
