The American public first met Khizr Kahn during the 2016 Democratic National Convention. That's when he spoke out against then-candidate Donald Trump's proposed ban on Muslim immigrants and challenged Trump's understanding of the U.S. Constitution.

Khan and his wife, Ghazala, are Gold Star parents. Their son, Humayun, a U.S. Army Capt. was killed in Iraq in 2004.

After Khan's speech at the convention, he was thrust into a ferocious political controversy that has not ended. Khan's new book, "An American Family," traces his family's pursuit of the American dream.

Khan was in San Diego Wednesday to be the keynote speaker at the Anti-Defamation League's "No Place for Hate" Leadership Conference. The "No Place For Hate" campaign promotes a message of inclusion and civility to combat bias at San Diego County schools.

Khan and ADL regional director Tammy Gilles discuss Thursday on Midday Edition the importance of spreading this message in schools and how Khan's life has changed since his speech at the convention.
