Santee Brush Fire Spread Halted, Evacuation Notice Lifted

UPDATE: 5:06 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020

An evacuation notice issued Wednesday in Santee due to a brush fire named the Chaparral Fire has been lifted. Firefighters have halted the spread of the fire.

Residents living along Princess Joann and Dakota Ranch roads were asked to evacuate to Santana High School, 9915 N. Magnolia Ave., which has been set up as a temporary shelter.

Northbound Cuyamaca Street was closed at Mollie Lane to prevent access to Chaparral Drive, where the fire activity, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies evacuated some homes, possibly as many as a dozen, nearest the northward-moving flames as crews worked to subdue the fire by ground and aboard water-dropping helicopters, sheriff's Lt. Glen Twyman said.

As of 4:15 p.m., firefighters stopped the forward spread of the fire at 36 acres, Cal Fire said on Twitter. Firefighters will remain on the scene for several hours for mop-up and containment.

Shortly after, San Diego Sheriff announced that those who had evacuated their homes due to the Chaparral Fire could return safely. In addition, Northbound Cuyamaca Street at Mollie Lane was reopened to traffic and the temporary evacuation point at Santana High School closed.

The fire started for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10,000 block of Chaparral Drive. Cal Fire San Diego and the Sheriff’s Department was assisting the Santee Fire Department.

Emergency Supply Checklist

–Three-day supply of nonperishable food and three gallons of water per person.

– Map marked with at least two evacuation routes.

– Prescriptions or special medications.

– Change of clothing.

– Extra eyeglasses or contact lenses.

– An extra set of car keys, credit cards, cash or traveler's checks.

– First aid kit.

– Flashlight.

– Battery-powered radio and extra batteries.

– Sanitation supplies.

– Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)

– Don't forget pet food and water!
