—A Spectacular Performance Before a Sold-Out Crowd at the Massive Summer Music Festival—
In May 2018, the BBC hosted “The Biggest Weekend,” a massive summer music festival held in four sites in four nations over four days. One of the absolute high points of the event was Sam Smith’s unforgettable performance on the main stage in Swansea’s Singleton Park in Wales, which electrified the sold-out crowd with smash hits including “Stay With Me” and “Money On My Mind.” “Sam Smith: Live At The BBC’s Biggest Weekend” special premieres on PBS!
Samuel Frederick Smith rose to fame in October 2012 after being featured on dance/electronic duo Disclosure’s breakthrough single “Latch,” which reached number 11 on the UK charts when Smith was just 21.
Smith’s next appearance on the charts was on Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” which became a number one single in May 2013. In December of that year, Smith was nominated for the 2014 BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll, winning both.
Smith’s debut studio album, “In the Lonely Hour,” was released in May 2014. “Money on My Mind” rose to number one in the UK and another single, “Stay With Me,” was an international success, reaching number one in the UK and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album won four Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
The “Thrill of It All,” Smith’s second studio album, was released in November 2017 and debuted at the top of the UK and US album charts. The lead single, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” reached Top Ten status in the UK, Australia and the US. The release of Smith’s third album was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to four Grammy Awards, Smith has won three BRIT Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, an American Music Award, and a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Writing’s On the Wall,” the theme for the James Bond film "Spectre" (2015), which was co-written with Jimmy Napes.
