Spring break is underway and San Diego’s beautiful weather is bringing large crowds to the beaches.

With more than 40 miles of oceanfront and bay shoreline to patrol, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s lifeguards have partnered with police to ensure both visitors and locals have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Some of the department’s recommendations are for people to know the rules of the beaches and bays.

A major safety concern is the rental and operation of aquatic vessels like boats and jet skis.

San Diego Lifeguard Chief James Gartland recommends renting from licensed businesses.

“Those vessels are well maintained. They’re safe, there’s insurance. They provide some instruction,” Gartland said.

Proper operation of water vessels is also key to safety. The department recommends all riders wear a proper life vest, have a throwable floatation device, a serviceable fire extinguisher, registration and a rental agreement if renting.

Authorities encourage anyone visiting the beaches and bays to wear masks and social distance.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
