Grecia and Mark Devlin knew they wanted to have kids. But when the Southern California couple started trying to conceive, a year went by without success.
That kicked off a journey, which eventually led to Tijuana, Mexico, where the Devlins underwent in vitro fertilization, or IVF. It’s by far the most expensive fertility treatment. But in Mexico, it's costs a fraction of what it does in California.
“Port of Entry,” a border podcast from KPBS and PRX, continues its series on medical tourism at the border with this story about crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to try one last time to have a baby. It’s a story about the lengths some people will go to when the future they envisioned is suddenly out of reach.
These are cross-border stories that connect us. Border people often inhabit this in-between place. From KPBS and PRX, “Port of Entry” tells personal stories from this place — stories of love, hope, struggle and survival from border crossers, fronterizxs and other people whose lives are shaped by the wall. Rooted in San Diego with tendrils reaching into Tijuana. Hosted by Alan Lilienthal, produced by Kinsee Morlan and sound design by Emily Jankowski.
