The myKPBS Film Club just got passes for the new horror film "The Last Exorcism" (opening August 27 throughout San Diego).
Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) is an evangelical minister who performs exorcisms. He arrives at a rural Louisiana farm where he expects to perform another routine exorcism on some religious fanatic. He has also agreed to let a documentary crew film the exorcism. But the teenage girl he meets presents something a little different than he anticipated.
Eli Roth (of "Hostel" fame) is touted as the presenter of this film. The studio is obviously banking on his horror rep to bring people in. But the film's director, Daniel Stamm, has made an intriguingly creepy little film before this that also dealt with the faux documentary style. Stamm's "A Necessary Death" (2008) had a simple but nasty little premise. Three film students decide to do their final film project on someone planning to commit suicide. So they place an ad looking for the perfect candidate. Their plan is to follow the person through all the stages and to the final act of killing themselves. Stamm -- plus the fact the studio is screening the film early -- gives me hope that maybe "The Last Exorcism" will hold some genuine scares. I can always hope.
